SUMMARY

Sustaining Life, Resisting Injustice: Labour, Borders and Care from the Global South
Georgina Orellano
Activista, Argentina
Kerly Garavito
Activista, Peru
SUMMARY

This opening presentation invites us to examine care through the experiences of people whose lives and labour have historically been pushed to the margins—through gender inequality, racism, precarity, criminalisation, or the stigma imposed by moral and institutional norms.

The session addresses one of the Congress’s central themes: the need to recognise that care has long rested on an unequal distribution of labour, time, responsibility and social value, shaped by gender and other power structures. Care can no longer be treated simply as a vocation or framed in terms of sacrifice and obedience.

Searching for the Missing: Grief, Justice and Care
Martha Delgado y Bielka Lizet Sanudo
Madres Buscadoras de México, Mexico
SUMMARY

This session places care within one of the most extreme contexts of harm: the disappearance of a loved one. Searching for a missing person means continuing to care in their physical absence. It means sustaining the bond when the state fails to act, justice is delayed and violence attempts to erase every trace of their existence.

The session reflects the Congress’s understanding of conflict as extending beyond war. Conflict also takes shape through institutional, social and political structures that generate abandonment, exhaustion, impunity and suffering.

What the Body Hears
Isabel Morera
Artista escénica, payasa, creadora
SUMMARY

After a first part shaped by voices addressing work, bodies, borders, disappearance, memory, grief, justice and community, Soy Caprina’s performance offers a different kind of pause: one that not only helps us organise our thoughts, but also allows us to register emotions, tensions, silences and resonances.

A clown can express what institutional language sometimes fails to name. They can expose the absurd, accompany pain without turning it into a spectacle, introduce tenderness without romanticising, and remind us that even amid harm, we still need bodily presence, laughter, connection and human bonds.

This artistic reflection will gather the threads of the morning from a different perspective: not through a fixed conclusion, but through an open question. What has shifted within us? What continues to resonate? Which images, words or silences do we need to hold with care before we continue thinking together?

The performance will remind us that community is built not only through grand speeches, but also through small gestures, shared listening, laughter that does not deny pain, and our ability to find one another again after confronting what hurts.

Migrating, Sustaining, Resisting: Care, Racism and the Right to Belong
Daniela Lagos Chávez
Socióloga, activista feminista migrante y antirracista, Madrid
SUMMARY

This presentation invites us to consider care through the lens of migration, racism and the unequal organisation of life. Care cannot be separated from borders, residence permits, racialised bodies or the global care chains in which some women sustain the lives of other families while their own rights remain threatened or conditional.

This session connects directly with the Congress’s decolonial approach, which understands borders not only as geographical lines but also as mechanisms that determine who is allowed to move, rest, receive care, be mourned or live with full rights.

Never Again for Whom? Palestine, Care and Dignity Under Siege
Luz Sosa
Fotoperiodista, fotógrafa documental y artista visual, Canarias
SUMMARY

This presentation will focus on Palestine as one of the territories where the question of care takes on a profoundly political, ethical and human dimension. In a context shaped by occupation, displacement, the destruction of essential infrastructure, the loss of civilian lives, the breakdown of communities and the struggle for the very right to exist, care cannot be reduced to immediate assistance. It also encompasses dignity, memory, justice, international protection, reparation and the right to remain.

The guest speaker will be confirmed shortly and will offer a grounded perspective on the Palestinian reality, the impact of violence on everyday life and the need to understand care as a way of defending our shared humanity wherever the material conditions of existence have been systematically attacked.

Beyond Harm: Rebuilding Our Shared Life
Isabel Morera

SUMMARY

The closing session of the first day will bring together its main themes: work, bodies, territory, disappearance, migration, racism, reparation and community. The day will have shown that care is not only about meeting needs, but also about fighting for the conditions that make a dignified life possible.

The first day can close with a simple yet powerful idea: When conflict seeks to break our bonds, caring means rebuilding our shared life.

Rights, Regularisation and the Defence of Life
Helena Maleno
Periodista, investigadora, defensora de derechos humanos, Caminando Fronteras, Madrid
Laura Menna y Valeria Mastroianni
Regularización Ya!, Canarias
SUMMARY

This roundtable invites us to understand the border not as a geographical line, but as a political structure that distributes protection, mobility, recognition and the right to live with dignity unequally.

Drawing on the perspectives of Caminando Fronteras, the Regularisation Action Platform and ODESOCAN, the session will explore three complementary dimensions: defending lives along migration routes, supporting regularisation processes and the responsibility of institutions to guarantee social rights.

The roundtable will ask what it means to care when lives become trapped between the sea, the border, waiting and bureaucracy. In this context, caring means raising the alarm, accompanying, regularising, advising, denouncing abuses, documenting, sustaining and building networks. It means ensuring that the border does not have the final say on human dignity.

SUMMARY

This roundtable grounds the conversation in the responsibilities of local communities. Migration does not happen in the abstract: people arrive at specific ports, neighbourhoods, services, institutions, professional teams and communities. Reception therefore cannot be understood solely as a matter for central government or as a question of institutional responsibilities. It also concerns local and island authorities, emergency services, citizen networks and our collective capacity to respond with dignity.

This session brings together practical experience, political management and international cooperation. Civil Protection will contribute the perspective of first responders; El Hierro’s Department of Social Rights will reflect on what can be achieved by local government; and Livorno will share its experience of welcoming cities as a political and community network.

The central question is simple yet profound: what does it mean to welcome people when merely receiving them is not enough? Welcoming means coordinating, protecting, accompanying and guaranteeing rights. It also means fostering responsible public discourse, strengthening coexistence and recognising that a community’s humanity is measured in part by how it treats those who arrive after being placed in situations of heightened vulnerability.

Confronting the Realities of Borders
Isabel Morera

SUMMARY

This reflective session will bring together the ideas, tensions and questions that emerged throughout the morning. The discussions will have presented the border as a place where rights, grief, regularisation, reception, political management, racism, community and institutional responsibility intersect.

The reflection is not intended to close the conversation, but to organise the threads that should accompany us throughout the rest of the day: how to care without treating care as a substitute for rights; how to welcome without paternalism; how to regularise without turning people’s lives into an administrative maze; how local communities can respond even when their formal powers are limited; and how to build community without denying the conflicts that run through it.

“No a la lanzadera”: Territory, Community and the Defence of the Commons
Fabiola Ávila
Ingeniera y técnica medioambiental. Participante en la movilización contra el radar y la lanzadera en El Hierro, Canarias.
SUMMARY

“No a la lanzadera” invites us to consider care from a territorial and community perspective. Care is not only about supporting people in vulnerable situations; it is also about defending the places where life unfolds, the conditions that allow people to remain, the fragile balance of an island territory and the right of communities not to be treated as mere settings for decisions made by others.

This section connects the Congress with El Hierro in a way that goes beyond symbolism. The island is not presented simply as the event’s host, but as a political actor, a living territory and a community that reflects, resists and defends its future.

Anti-Racism: “Because I Am Racist Too”
Melinda Gladys D. Pajunen
Mujeres Africanas y Afrodescendientes en Canarias, Canarias
SUMMARY

This workshop presents anti-racism as an inseparable dimension of care. Transformative care is impossible without challenging the racist structures that shape access to rights, belonging, credibility, protection, participation and social recognition.

Using a collective, self-reflective methodology, Mujeres Afro Canarias will create a space to examine how racism operates in everyday life, how it is reproduced even within spaces that describe themselves as feminist, social, community-based or committed to human rights, and which practices we need to reconsider so that community is not an empty word, but something everyone can truly inhabit.
